Finite Element Analysis

One of Vard Marine’s signature services is finite element analysis (FEA), used to calculate a vessel design’s potential stresses and fatigue.

Finite Element Analysis
This advanced analysis tool, uniquely tailored for complex structures, enhances the efficiency and accuracy of each of our designs.

MARINE FIRM’S FEA PHILOSOPHY

We perform a wide range of FEA modeling, from large whole ship models to detailed local models. Our clients come from both the public and private sectors, and include navies, coast guards and offshore oil and gas.

Finite element analysis is a good choice at any stage of design, from concept phases to the detailed functional stage where problems can be difficult – and expensive – to solve by other established but more manual methods.

We’re able to optimise a vessel’s structural configuration, and wherever possible reduce a vessel’s weight while maintaining high safety standards.

With advanced FEA software in our toolkit and more than 40 years of combined FEA experience, the Vard Marine team puts efficiency to work for our clients, without compromising on quality.

THE CLIENT ADVANTAGE

Whether you need a report or a model, you’ll be amazed by the detail and clarity of what we deliver. You can be confident in every element of the design, and trust that the product is both accurate and complete.

That means if you’re submitting a design to a Classification Society with a clear, concise report from Vard Marine, you can expect a speedy acceptance – with the added benefits of saving time and reducing cost overruns during construction.

HOW WE USE FEA

To perform our finite element analysis, we use NXNastran FEA software from Seimens PLM Software, together with Femap, to create FE models.

FEA brings clarity to designs through:

  • linear static analysis (stress & deformation)
  • modal analysis to identify vibration risk, prevent structural fatigue and improve comfort
  • thermal expansion analysis

WE DON’T STOP THERE

Vard Marine has an extensive suite of in-house programs developed using the Femap API. Not only do these programs allow us to automate and speed up construction, loading and reporting, they also empower us to tackle further assessments such as buckling and hot-spot fatigue.

In addition to the FEA report model which covers all aspects of the analysis, at your request we’ll provide the complete FEA model which can be used for follow-on analysis.

And finally, we are happy to submit the report to a Classification Society for approval to complete the process.

  • non-linear analysis to determine the ultimate strength of structural arrangements.
